Our Vintage Elm Screen was made in China sometime in the late 19th century. Commonly used as a window covering in homes across the country, this intricate lattice-work shutter was originally paired with a thin rice paper panel in the summer months or a heavy cloth in winter weather to protect the interior from the elements. Once covered in a lacquered paint, it has been stripped back to its natural unfinished wood. A true handmade artifact, each is unique with imperfections and wear consistent with its age and use.
