 It was in the summer of 1950 that Bauhaus artist and color theorist Josef Albers first began to experiment with depictions of squares as a method for exploring the optical effects of simple color combinations. At the time, he could not have foreseen that this experiment would quickly become the center of his artistic world up until his death in 1976 — but over the next quarter of a century, it blossomed into an obsession that resulted in a groundbreaking series of over two thousand oil paintings known collectively as Homage to the Square.
