Shot and compiled by Belgian photographer Stephan Vanfleteren, Surf Tribe offers an intimate look at the heart of surf culture and the people that make up this fluid, borderless community. Looking beyond the beaches of California, Hawaii and Australia, Vanfleteren traveled the world, seeking out surfers on the shores of Senegal, France, Indonesia, Brazil and more. As diverse as the places they hail from, his subjects range from eager young beginners and elderly surfer hippies to local legends and global icons— all connected by a shared love of the water and an addiction to the waves and all featured here in over three hundred stunning images. Rather than the action shots you might expect, however, Vanfleteren momentarily anchored these fearless wave-riders on the sand, capturing them in serene black and white portraits done in his well-known haunting style. The result is a series of breathtaking images that encapsulate the real person behind the surfer and all the strength, passion and vulnerability that return them to the ocean again and again.
