DESCRIPTION

We love textiles — especially textiles that are rich in history and meaning, like our White African Mudcloth. An age-old Malian craft, mudcloth, or bògòlanfini, has been crafted by West African people since roughly the 12th century. An arduous process that can take weeks to complete, this traditional textile starts with narrow strips of cotton fabric, which are stitched together to create a larger whole. It’s dyed using the mashed and boiled leaves of native wolobugun trees until it takes on a yellow hue and naturally sun-dried. Rather than painted with the geometric motifs that mudcloth is typically known for, our White African Mudcloth is bleached to create a simple off-white textile. Filled with cultural significance, we love our White African Mudcloth as a global layer or wall hanging. Handmade from start to finish, no two are alike.
