Vintage Swedish Abstract Painting

Born in Stockholm in 1916, self-taught artist Ulf E. Wikström’s paintings were featured in galleries and exhibitions across Sweden throughout the 1940s and early 1950s, with some works still on display in Stockholm, Värmland and Jönköping museums today. Heavily influenced by the early 20th century Cubist artists that came before him, he created mainly still life and landscape paintings made up of simple geometric shapes in combinations of neutral and bright, vibrant colors. This piece, titled Kaktus Blomman, or “cactus flower,” is a perfect example of his style, featuring an abstract depiction of a seaside scene using oil on canvas. Monogram signed in its left-hand corner, this painting is displayed exactly as we found it, with its original wood frame and backing.
